When something is not right

Most problems fall into one of a handful of shapes. Each one below says what the symptom actually means, which is usually the fastest route to the fix.

Connection

"Connection timeout"

This means nothing answered. Your credentials were never tried, so the problem is the address, the port, or the network - never the password.

  1. Open DSM in the phone's browser at exactly the address and port you typed. If the browser cannot reach it either, the app is not the problem.
  2. Check HTTPS matches the port. 5001 is the HTTPS listener and 5000 is the HTTP one. Crossing them times out.
  3. Check the phone's network. A local address like 192.168.1.20 does not exist on mobile data. Join the Wi-Fi, or use QuickConnect, a domain or a VPN.
  4. On iOS, allow local network access. Settings › Apps › Syno Manager › Local Network. Without it iOS silently blocks connections to your own network, and the symptom is a timeout that looks like a network fault.
  5. Check DSM's firewall. Control Panel › Security › Firewall - a rule allowing only certain addresses will block a phone that is not one of them.
  6. Check the NAS is awake. A sleeping NAS does not answer. Wake it first.
Sign-in

"Invalid credentials" or a certificate error

MessageWhat it meansFix
Invalid credentialsThe NAS answered and refused the sign-in. Address and port are right.Check the username and password. Check whether the account uses 2FA - the toggle has to be on. Check DSM's auto-block list under Control Panel › Security › Account in case failed attempts have blocked your address.
Certificate errorHTTPS is on and certificate verification is also on, against a self-signed certificate.Turn Verify SSL Certificate off. Most DiskStations present a self-signed certificate; the connection stays encrypted either way.
2FA requiredThe account uses two-factor authentication and the toggle is off.Turn on Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) in the NAS's configuration and reconnect.
2FA codes rejectedUsually a clock, not a code.Codes are derived from the current time. Check the phone's clock and the NAS's - the NAS's time source is on the home screen's quick-stats row.
Was working, now asks to sign inStored credentials became unreadable - it can happen after restoring the app onto a new phone. The app clears what it cannot read and asks you to sign in again. Re-enter the password once.
Username with a space in it? That works. The app quotes it correctly, which is a common reason other clients fail on accounts like John Smith.
Missing things

A tab, sub-view or card is not there

There are exactly three reasons, and they have different fixes.

  1. The package is not installed. The app reads what your NAS can do and hides everything it cannot. No Download Station package, no Download Station tab. Install it from Package Center.
  2. It was installed after you connected. The capability list is read on connect. Pull to refresh, or reopen the app, and it appears.
  3. It is hidden. Check the tab's ⋮ menu › Customize views, and Settings › Dashboard Categories for cards. See customizing.
Tapping a card whose view is hidden will tell you so and offer a Customize button. If it says your NAS does not offer that view, the package genuinely is not there.

Cameras

Live view works at home but not away

One setting fixes this: Tunnel camera live view through DSM port, in the NAS's configuration.

Logs

The system log will not load

If the log reports a connection timeout while the rest of the app works fine, the thing not answering is the Log Center service on the NAS, not your connection.

Widgets

The home screen widget is out of date

Android and iOS decide when a widget may refresh, and both ration it hard to save battery. No app can force one - which is why each widget prints the time its numbers were taken instead of a promise.

Assistant

There is no Assistant tab

The assistant needs an on-device model, and the tab is hidden entirely on hardware that does not have one - a control that cannot work is worse than no control.

Still stuck

Report it

Bugs and feature requests go in the public tracker, where they get a number and a thread rather than disappearing into an inbox.

Report a bug or request a feature

What to include: the app version (Settings shows it inline, and About has the build number), your DSM version, your NAS model, whether you are on your own network or away, and what you expected instead. A screenshot with anything private cropped out helps more than a description.
Common questions

Troubleshooting FAQ

It says connection timeout. What does that mean?
That nothing answered at the address and port you gave - the credentials were never tried. Check that HTTPS matches the port, that the phone is on a network that can reach the NAS, and that DSM's own web interface loads in the phone's browser at the same address.
Why does it say invalid credentials when my password is right?
Because the NAS answered and refused the sign-in. Check for a typo, check whether the account uses 2FA, and check DSM's auto-block list in case repeated attempts have blocked your phone's address.
Why can I not see a tab I expect?
Either the package behind it is not installed, or the sub-view is hidden. A package installed since you connected needs a refresh - pull down, or reopen the app.
My cameras work at home but not away.
Turn on Tunnel camera live view through DSM port. With it off, live view wants RTSP on port 554, which is usually not reachable from outside.
My photos show as blank tiles.
HEIC photos are decoded on the device because DSM 7.2.2+ no longer builds previews for them. If older photos are blank too, use re-index on the Photos screen.
Why is my widget showing old numbers?
Because the operating system decides when a widget may refresh. Each widget shows when its data was captured for exactly that reason; opening the app is the surest refresh.
